Green roofs, green walls and various forms of container gardening have been increasing due to the popularity and success of greening our cities and the movement to become sustainable. These grass root efforts have been evidence in themselves that every effort we take, as a society, can make a difference in the health of our planet.
Over the last 10 to 15 years many of the urban revitalization projects have included and in some cases, like the city of Chicago, have mandated that all new projects include a roof garden element. For the Property and Facility Management Industry in North America, this is a fairly new infrastructure or amenity to be reckoned with. In fact, groups such as IREM, IFMA and BOMA are just now beginning to realize there is a demand for education about the subject of negative environmental impact and what today’s building owner or manager should or can do. All of these organizations have developed programs to train new Property and Facility Managers about this important subject. In addition, today’s building owner is now able to obtain LEED certification a building and tenant’s are being asked to sign “Green Leases“. It is no longer a fad, but a part of our entire program and culture to think about the environment with every deal made or decision or project we contemplate.
That is all well and good of course, but there still remains some doubt or hesitancy on many building owners and managers about the opportunity to green “THE ROOF”. “THE ROOF” has always been a highly secured area with tight control and serious consequences due to liability. As building owners and managers we cringe at the thought of increased risk. There are visions of people being hurt, roof membrane punctures and assorted fears, all built in and programmed into our veins. There is equipment up there, vents, machinery and opportunities galore for accidents. This is not a place a building owner or manager wants to include in their plan to be green.
It is for this very reason that we all need to share our experiences, our solutions and our processes to alleviate those fears and predispositions. Believe me, “THE ROOF” is the last place on earth a building owner or manager wants to mess with. If we can relieve some of these misconceptions, talk about solutions and give examples, maybe this topic will unfold.
By providing photographs, videos, experts, green roof types and green wall opportunities, we may be able to make a difference and give the building owners and managers insight that they could not obtain on their own.
Our goal to provide as much information, resources and rooftop gardens or greening initiative locations for the ecologically minded building owner or manager and give them the information about greening a rooftop. With the most comprehensive database of rooftop gardens in the world, how can we go wrong?
There is always someone who has already been there for you to network with, or if a public rooftop, one to tour or visit or even photograph. In addition we are gathering as much data as we can about each project. With the help of the entire rooftop greening industry, we are including as much data as possible about each project as there is a need for information and resources about plants, flowers, soils, containers, green roof systems, weather impact on green roofs, the building’s interior impact on a green roof system, the difference between intensive and extensive green roofs.
Not only do we want to assist those with rooftop gardening and greening projects today, but we want to encourage rooftop gardening and greening for those who would otherwise be discouraged by its complexities. The greening of rooftops is a very misunderstood process that needs to be exposed and introduced as a viable replacement to the traditional barren rooftop. Sharing this information should help building owners and managers with their rooftop greening projects. By contributing your project, you bring us all one step closer to understanding how we can make a difference.
Thank you for considering a green rooftop!
